EFFECTS OF CYBERBULLYING
That may be the collective perception of those doing the bullying or of the onlookers. But mind you, the Internet never forgets.
Every kind of bullying can have physical and psychological consequences. Anxiety, fear, depression, low self-esteem, behavioural issues, and academic struggles(especially among students). Cyberbullying, nonetheless, may be incredibly scarring.
There are numerous feasible explanations for this. For instance, unlike traditional bullying — which is often restricted to school and known bullies — cyberbullying can happen at any time, day or night, and be executed by unidentified sources. This makes it more relentless and, often, cruller.
Cyberbullying has wrecked the minds of many, some of its effects include humiliation; this often takes place when the subject of the bullying has their personal information or has been embarrassed online via social media.
Another symptom and effect would be isolation.
In terms of effect, the bullying often disconnects the subject from their friends and environment as they begin to feel humiliated to be in these spaces.
This often can escalate into social anxiety and depression (long term).
Other of such effects which will stem from the above can be suicidal thoughts and self-harm, academic difficulties, substance abuse, insomnia, eating disorders, etc.
Why do people find it necessary to harass people online? Do they feel no sympathy? No remorse? Do they not ever reflect on these actions? And how can we as a community help curb such atrocious acts or stop them completely?
Well, we could start by not turning a blind eye.
